Catching the tax dodgers

KEY POINTS

  • Is HMRC placing enough focus on tax evaders rather than avoiders?
  • Requirement to correct obligation is likely to come into effect this year.
  • Programme showed the different treatment to three individuals caught with undisclosed income.
  • How effective are HMRC’s methods?

Is HMRC really keeping up with the tax dodgers? HMRC estimates the latest tax gap at £36bn of which some £11.4bn relates to illegal tax evasion and the hidden economy. Much of HMRC’s focus in recent years has been aimed at preventing and tackling artificial tax avoidance and that particular battle is largely being won. But tax evasion? Can HMRC manage to re-focus its efforts on those who deliberately understate – or indeed fail to disclose at all – their income and gains?
