Assessing the accuracy of claims made by a BBC documentary

KEY POINTS

  • Panorama ignored the government’s distinction between aggressive and acceptable tax planning.
  • GAAR panel was meant to be independent not to “advise the taxman”.
  • Companies are taking advantage of deliberate government policy.

The Panorama episode Tax Lies and Videotape broadcast on BBC1 on Monday 16 September aroused significant criticisms. What about the arguments put forward in the piece? Were they accurate or not?
