Research on the role of cash in facilitating non-compliance.

HMRC are carrying out research on the role of cash in facilitating non-compliance and how this may change. As well as analysing internal data from evasion and hidden economy compliance work HMRC have commissioned external social research into how businesses and consumers use cash and non-cash alternatives in transactions.

HMRC state that according to statistics from Payments UK a trade association that supports the payments industry:

  • for goods and services purchased from retailers face to face online or by telephone 52% of payments are made in cash representing a gradual relative decline in use. The absolute value of cash payments has been stable over the past 15 years and stands at less than 50% of all consumption;
