Electricians have until 15 May to register to pay undisclosed tax and suffer only a minor penalty.
Under HMRC’s electricians tax safe plan, individuals pay outstanding tax and interest while incuring a fine ranging between an addtional 10% and 20%. The Revenue can usually demand up to 100% of the money owed and will undertake criminal investigation in the worst cases.
Once registered, taxpayers must make payment arrangements no later than 14 August.
The electricians tax safe plan is the second HMRC campaign aimed at tradespeople, the first having targeted plumbers and heating engineers. Since that so-called amnesty ended, the Revenue says 14 people have been arrested, and one was jailed for 12 months in March for evading £91,000 of tax and National Insurance.
