Depressing Dave

I found The Dave channel depressing reading in so many ways. I'll comment on just two.

There seems a big concern that the press treats HMRC unfairly in that others who lose data do not hit the headlines and that somehow it's just bad luck all the fault of the press and 'we have done nothing wrong'.

Yet there have in fact been a good many other such stories since mid-November last year. But the real point is the complete lack of basic general management and IT management procedures.

First that a junior employee had access to such intimate information on nearly 50% of the population; secondly that the burning of this information onto CD-Roms seems to be routinely permitted; and thirdly that the NAO 'help' given in its request was blatantly overridden by a senior official on 'cost grounds'.
