Dealing with a missed tax return-filing deadline

Spurred on by advertisements advising me that 'tax doesn't have to be taxing' and of the ease of e-filing I decided to file my self assessment tax return online this year.

Of course being human I deferred this until the deadline day itself as I had many other work and organisational matters to deal with in the run up to my three-week sailing holiday abroad.

I am writing this query in haste before my early morning flight as I was unable to file my return using HMRC's software. Nor have I managed to pay my outstanding tax liability as this failure meant that the liability was not calculated.

A cursory look over the 36-page tax calculation guide quickly made me realise that I would not realistically be able to negotiate this.
