A bill proposing a Welsh visitor levy has been introduced to the Senedd.
The rate would be set at 75p per person per night for stays at campsites and hostels and £1.25 per person per night for stays in all other types of accommodation. The levy would apply to all visitors staying overnight regardless of where they have travelled from.
If the bill becomes law local authorities will be able to decide whether they want to introduce a levy after consulting their local population and businesses. The earliest introduction for such a levy would be 2027.
If all local authorities were to introduce the levy it could raise up to £33m according to the Welsh government. This new money would be used to help local areas cover the costs associated with tourism.
The Chartered Institute of Taxation welcomed the Welsh government’s commitment...
