Welsh income tax rates are unchanged

Mark Drakeford Welsh finance minister set out the Welsh government’s Budget for 2025-26. The key tax announcements are:

  • Welsh rates of income tax will remain unchanged at 10% so Welsh income taxpayers will continue to pay the same rates as people in England and Northern Ireland.
  • The higher residential rates of land transaction tax applying to purchases of additional residential properties rose by 1% from 11 December 2024.
  • From 6 April 2025 the standard rate of landfill disposal tax will rise to £126.15 the unauthorised rate to £189.25 and the lower rate to £6.30 a tonne.

Further in early 2025 draft regulations will be laid in the Senedd to ensure multiple dwellings relief (MDR) claims will not be allowed where the subsidiary dwelling exemption (SDE) is applied so that taxpayers subject to the SDE would pay the main residential rates on the...
