Value of linking e-invoicing to real-time reporting

The consultation on e-invoicing gives much food for thought. I think that it is inevitable that sooner or later the UK will move in this direction – as the consultation points out we are behind the curve at the moment.

There are a couple of points that are worth stressing here. The first is that the government ‘does not plan to explore in detail’ a model under which all invoices are routed through a central government platform which processes them before they are issued to the customer. As Shakespeare said ‘for this relief much thanks’. Some readers may recall that in the original discussion about real-time information there was a similar suggestion that all PAYE should be processed through a government hub – that never got off the starting block.
