On 8 July 2020 at about 12.30pm Rishi Sunak stood up in parliament to present his summer economic update or as variously described his mini-budget or summer statement. He was a man with a plan and this was in the accompanying policy paper document entitled A plan for jobs 2020 (tinyurl.com/ycr28wlq).

Having dealt with the first stage of the immediate threat of the virus the government in this second stage now wants to get the economy moving again.

The actions which could cost up to £30bn are as follows.

  • Introducing a new job retention bonus to encourage firms to retain furloughed workers.
  • Supporting jobs with direct help to find work and to gain the skills people need to get a job.
  • Protecting jobs in the hospitality and accommodation sectors and at attractions by supporting demand...
