The government has accepted several of the recommendations in the Office of Tax Simplification’s report Simplifying everyday tax for smaller businesses published in May 2019. The document discussed simplifying administrative matters for businesses with fewer than ten employees and annual turnover below £2m.
The financial secretary to the Treasury Jesse Norman has responded to the report in a letter which was dated 5 November. In essence:
- HMRC will prioritise improving PAYE and real-time information;
- a senior HMRC official has been appointed to oversee and provide leadership on the agent strategy. They will make sure the role and needs of agents are understood and incorporated into the development of new systems;
- HMRC will continue to map small business journeys across the tax system so that in time all major journeys will be covered; and
- it will align and streamline payment processes across different taxes.
