Sign up clients early for digitalisation

From April 2025 HMRC says it will write to taxpayers whose 2023-24 self-assessment tax return shows their income from these sources was close to or over £50 000 to let them know that they may need to use making tax digital for income tax from April 2026.

HMRC tells advisers they may be able to sign up clients affected by the change for MTD now. From April 2025 there will be two sign-up options.

Option 1 is to sign up now for 2025-26 to prepare clients and familiarise them with the changes. HMRC says that advisers and clients who sign up now will have exclusive access to HMRC’s MTD customer support team.

Option 2 is to sign up for 2026-27.
