A record 93.68% of self-assessment tax returns were completed by the 31 January deadline, HMRC has revealed. This equates to more than 10.8 million returns filed on time but leaves 731,186 outstanding.
HMRC received more than 735,000 returns on 31 January. The peak hour for filing was between 4pm and 5pm when 60,000 were filed.
Breaking another record, the number of taxpayers who filed online soared to more than 10.1 million (93.5% of the total filed).
