HMRC received 11,509,810 returns by 31 January. This includes expected returns, voluntary returns and late registrations. The busiest time for filing was between 4pm and 5pm when 58,517 people hit the send button. Another 31,442 left it to the final hour before submitting.
More than 97.3% of returns were filed online and 304,000 sent on paper.
In line with last year, the department estimates that 1.1 million taxpayers missed the deadline and is urging anyone who failed to file in time to submit their return as soon as possible.
