The data showed that those opting to file in the first week of the new tax year has increased by nearly 100 000 since 2018. The most popular day to file a tax return during that week was 6 April with the Sunday being the least popular day to file.

Nudge letters for 2021-22

HMRC has begun a one-to-many letter campaign concerning potential discrepancies in benefit claims and the high income child benefit charge in clients’ 2021-22 self-assessment returns. The letter explains that HMRC will contact the agent to provide further details with a view to enabling the agents to help their clients to correct any errors without the need for a formal enquiry. A copy of the letter is on the CIOT website.
