HMRC tax avoidance deterrent list ‘not working’

Visits to HMRC’s Current list of named tax avoidance schemes promoters enablers and suppliersis low according to a freedom of information request by accountancy firm RSM.

The aim of the list is to give taxpayers all the information necessary to identify and avoid tax avoidance schemes inform them of the risks of these schemes and give them the opportunity to reconsider their tax position should they be involved in one.

The data shows that between 4 May 2022 and 3 May 2023 the webpage which contains the list had a total of 43 282 unique views (3 600 a month approximately). Sian Marsden associate director at RSM said: ‘It is clear from the various methods by which HMRC promotes the list that this is in fact a key priority however the limited number of webpage unique views may suggest that...
