Key points

  • Claims for research and development can be made using HMRC’s online template.
  • Claimants must provide information about each project in line with four questions.
  • The aim is to make it easier for HMRC to decide whether a project qualifies.
  • Project costs have to be given for each one rather than amalgamated.
  • So far uptake of the online template is low.
  • The template is a positive step towards providing clarity on how to make a claim.


In February 2019 we entered a brave new world when it became possible to submit research and development (R&D) claim information online.

This does not replace the submission of the claim which is done on the tax return commonly by providing a report as a pdf attachment. There is also no change in the requirement to provide adequate information to demonstrate that each project included in the claim...
