An ill wind

Malaria continues to be a scourge on a large proportion of the planet’s population with various programmes including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation seeking to defeat it. One advantage is that we do now know quite a bit about the disease and the causes of infection. No longer do we believe that it is caused by bad air – the ‘mal aria’. We know instead that it is transmitted by a parasite hosted by mosquitoes.

We can only hope that in the fullness of time we will get to grips with coronavirus or Covid-19. And on the basis that this is spread between humans without the need for insects or other intermediaries let us hope that we can find a cure faster than it took with malaria. In the meantime and in its absence...
