From 7 December 2023, HMRC will no longer send a letter informing taxpayers or their advisers of a self-assessment (SA) repayment. HMRC said these letters tended to cause confusion because they often arrived after the repayment had been made.
There is no change to the repayment process, so taxpayers will still receive any monies owed to them through their bank as normal.
In an update for advisers, the department said taxpayers and agents can still see transactions online and taxpayers can also sign up to receive digital notifications.
However, HMRC has temporarily paused digital notification while it is also making improvements to its IT systems in relation to SA repayments. It said it will let agents know when the service is reinstated.
