HMRC will automatically allocate 88 000 UK VAT-registered businesses with economic operator registration and identification (EORI) numbers to assist with trade with the EU in the aftermath of a no-deal Brexit. 72 000 companies have already registered for EORI numbers. Non-VAT registered businesses will have to apply manually.
EORI numbers are a unique ID number allocated to businesses that enables them to be identified by Customs authorities when doing business with other traders. If they do not have an EORI number after the UK leaves the bloc they will be unable to continue to trade with EU member states.
