Activation PIN requirement suspended for self assessment online filing

HMRC has temporarily suspended the requirement for an activation code to be sent in the post before taxpayers can access the self-assessment online filing service.

These codes can take up to ten days to arrive and expire after 28 days.

An HMRC spokesperson confirmed: ‘We are changing the way some customers activate their self-assessment (SA) online service to allow them to file online earlier. Under the current process customers enrolling to file online receive an activation PIN through the post but since 25 November individual SA customers who already have a unique tax reference will be auto-activated for the SA online service if they enrol from their business tax account.

‘They will get immediate access to the online service if they can pass identity verification checks.’
