Cause for complaint?

KEY POINTS

  • The adjudicator provides an independent review of complaints about HMRC and the Valuation Office Agency.
  • In 2017-18 it accepted 967 new cases for investigation.
  • The number of complaints about HMRC upheld has fallen to 39% from 90% in 2013-14.
  • Most problems concern tax credits and ESC A19.
  • It is hoped that HMRC funds will continue to support the office.

The Adjudicator’s Office published its annual report on 11 July. It covers the period 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018 and also marks 25 years since the Adjudicator’s Office was set up.

The adjudicator’s role was created in 1993 to look into complaints about the Inland Revenue including the Valuation Office Agency. HM Customs and Excise and the Contributions Agency were added in 1995. From April...
