Employees urged to open personal tax accounts

Revenue suggests that employees self-serve online.

Employer Bulletin 72 the June edition of HMRC’s bi-monthly update contains articles on many subjects including student loans the apprenticeship levy and national living and minimum wage increases. Extracts follow but for details see here.

Online accounts

HMRC suggests that employers encourage their employees to self-serve online by activating their personal tax accounts (PTAs) (www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account). They can use it notify HMRC of a change in their financial circumstances or address. They can also:

  • update the information on the benefits they receive such as company car or medical cover;
  • view and print a copy of the pay and tax details for the previous four tax years;
  • claim tax relief on business expenses whether for cleaning their uniform or replacing their tools;
  • print proof of their National Insurance number;
  • ...
