A record 9.9 million taxpayers filed their 2016-17 returns online.
A record 9.9 million taxpayers used HMRC’s online self-assessment service to file their return, up from 9.57 million last year. Only 771,331 returns were filed on paper.
Some 10.7 million self-assessment tax returns were completed by the 31 January deadline. That is 93% of the total expected but leaves nearly 750,000 outstanding.
HMRC received 1,290,948 returns on 30 and 31 January. The busiest time was between 4pm and 5pm on 31 January, when 60,596 taxpayers clicked submit.
