This time last year we were predicting that January 2018 might be the last year of the 31 January tax return deadline and that we would soon be entering the world of Making Tax Digital. A lot has happened in the past 12 months and there are likely to be several more tax return seasons before we move fully into a new era. It is obvious now as it always was to most people that the original timetable for MTD was impossibly tight. No doubt everyone on all sides would have tried their best to make it work but it would have been an almighty muddle. More than that it would have forced poor design into the system instead of making it right from day one. Now there is a realistic chance that a system will emerge that will work for all parties.
