The Employer Bulletin for December 2016 contains useful articles and reminders for employers and payroll bureaux. Two items are summarised below but for details see here.

Paying HMRC

Letters about paying PAYE electronically and employer payment booklets are being issued now.

If making PAYE payments at a bank or post office using a payslip it is important to use the one HMRC provides because it will show the correct bank account.

From November 2016 HMRC has been contacting taxpayers who pay their tax by cheque through the post to ask them to consider paying electronically by online or telephone banking direct debit or debit or credit card online.

HMRC is encouraging electronic payment methods because unlike cheques they cannot be lost or intercepted and fraudulently cashed as long as the correct bank details and payment reference are used. In addition the payment will reach...
