Tax implications of donations used to run a free online magazine.
I run a magazine that makes no money; in fact it costs me a nominal amount every month. I and the others who help do not pay ourselves or make any income from it. At present we do not accept donations but I am starting to wonder whether we should. My question is: if we were to accept donations and if these were completely used to help run the magazine would the donations be subject to tax even if they went right back into running the magazine?
The magazine is online only and free and the donations would be used for costs such as advertising and website development. We would not be paying anyone and the donors would not receive anything in exchange for their donation. In any event I would expect most of the donations to be anonymous.
I am just curious as to how...
