The new CIOT president launches an initiative to improve tax policymaking.

In his inaugural speech as president of the Chartered Institute of Taxation Bill Dodwell invited members and other tax professionals to contribute to an initiative to improve tax policy in the UK.

This joint project of the CIOT the Institute for Government and the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) will work towards a set of recommendations to be published when the autumn statement is made.

Mr Dodwell said the aim was to combine the Institute for Government’s understanding of governmental practice the IFS’s experience analysing tax policy and the practical insight of CIOT members into how the tax system works. The evidence would be used to offer practical positive suggestions for improvements in the policymaking machinery of government.
