  • By 31 January 2016 HMRC had received 92% of the tax returns expected for 2014/15. If returns are outstanding try to mitigate late filing penalties by chasing clients for the information required to submit the return as soon as possible.

 

  • The taxpayer in Ali may have been fortunate to win his claim to loss relief but it seems that the fact he had a business plan and acted in an organised way worked in his favour. These may be important factors to draw to the attention of small trader clients.

 

  • During an enquiry HMRC can require a person to provide information or produce a document if the information or document is ‘reasonably required’ to check the tax position. This does not mean that the department can ask for anything.
