CIOT committment to SMEs operating in Europe.

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) has set the EU six objectives to ensure more UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) consider Europe to be their home market or at least carry greater pan-European ambitions.

It follows publication of the European Commission’s internal market strategy which among other areas aims to address key difficulties that SMEs and start-ups face during their lifecycle within the EU single market.

The challenges are:

  • end the disparity in registration rules;
  • simplify recovering VAT from other member states;
  • reduce the complexity of rules;
  • address inconsistent interpretation of common definitions;
  • tackle the complexity in compliance; and
  • more effective dispute resolution.
