VAT assessments are not always credible

About 25 years ago a member of my local cricket club had the nickname Two Noughts Tony.

The reason was simple: whenever he came up with a figure about either his earnings the cost of his car or the value of his house you always had to knock off two noughts from what he said to get an accurate figure.

I still recall his announcement about the year-end bonus of £25 000 he had received from his factory job in Luton and the revelation that his new Ford Fiesta car had cost £20 000.

“It’s got the full works ” he said proudly “including a glove compartment that doubles up as a wine cooler.”

The main challenge was trying to keep a straight face as these incredible numbers were revealed.
