AOSS

HMRC want volunteers to take part in the first live (private beta) release of their agent online self serve (AOSS). Practitioners can apply if they are based in the UK, have between 20 and 200 employer PAYE clients; and hold Government Gateway administrator credentials on behalf of their firm.

Essay competition

The ICAEW Tax Faculty 2015 essay competition, sponsored by Tolley, is open. Entries of 1,500 to 3,000 words must cover one of the listed issues. The contest is open to anyone aged under 30. The deadline is midday on 2 March.

Pension wise

HM Treasury has unveiled the name and logo of the new pensions guidance service. It will be called Pension Wise, offering free and impartial information and guidance to people approaching retirement with a defined contribution pension.

Budget 2015

The government wants taxpayers’ views on what they would like to see in the next Budget and autumn statement. More information is on GOV.UK.

Croatia

An agreement between the UK and Croatia was signed on 15 January 2015 amending the convention for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion. It will come into force when both countries have completed their parliamentary procedures and exchanged diplomatic notes.

Fuel duty

HMRC have published a draft statutory instrument and tax information and impact note concerning the extension of the fuel discount relief scheme. The Hydrocarbon oil and Biofuels (Road Fuel in Defined Areas) (Reliefs) Regulations 2011 will be amended to extend the fuel duty relief scheme under those regulations to other defined areas, as well as making other amendments to the scheme. Comments should be emailed by 11 February.
