Effect of owning a half-share in a property on residence status

Philip is a UK resident and UK-domiciled individual. He is a senior executive with an international company and has total annual income of around £500 000. He owns a house in London where he has lived for the past 10 years.

He also owns another house in Kent jointly with his brother Martin which was inherited when their mother died a few years ago. Martin lives in the Kent house and pays all of its bills. Philip has not lived there since he was a child but occasionally visits and stays there for a weekend.

Philip will start a new full-time job in Singapore on 1 January 2015 and will rent a house there for himself and his family. He expects to visit the UK on business a few times each year perhaps 10 to 15 days in total.
