THE NEW SHORT self-assessment tax return was sent to 50 000 taxpayers with straightforward tax affairs in April 2003. It contained four pages and could be telefiled as well as posted. In addition some 5 000 taxpayers who had previously been sent a tax return were not sent a return in April 2003. Instead half were required to complete a one-page form (P810) and the others did not have to complete anything. The Revenue has carried out research into how well these pilots schemes were received.
The research found that initial reaction to the short form was very positive. The accompanying letter to the form mentioned that not everyone who received the short form would be eligible to complete it. This point seemed largely to have gone unnoticed as only 30% of people...
