All of the drivers working for a taxi firm are self-employed and collect their own fares, which are not recorded as sales of the firm. What is the position for credit card transactions taken by the firm?

Our client operates a taxi firm where all the drivers (apart from the directors) are self-employed and unless working for account customers collect fares directly from the customer which are not recorded as sales of the main taxi firm.

However they are increasingly being asked if credit and debit cards can be used to pay. Obviously the individual drivers do not have the facility so the firm is considering getting a credit card facility whereby they can take the credit card details at the point of booking and once the journey is under way they will process the payment.

The idea would be that the company would be accepting payment as booking agent for the driver and apart from a small admin fee of say £1.50 to £2 per booking they would pass the money to the driver.
