Nursery gifts

I act on behalf of a nursery. The term has ended and as with many schools the parents are in the habit of giving presents to the employees who look after their children. Some of the employees have asked whether there are any tax implications related to these presents.

The school is in a fairly wealthy area and over recent years the presents appear to be of increasing value. Boxes of chocolates seem to be the least costly – although these will be artisan “chocolatier” makes rather than the normal high street brands. Vouchers may also be supplied and even the occasional spa weekend has been given.

The nursery owners have asked whether the employees should be declaring these gifts on a tax return? I would imagine that few if any of the nursery employees complete self-assessment tax returns because the levels...
