Businesses have until end of February to “get best terms available”

VAT-registered taxpayers not up to date with their returns and payments are being offered a time-limited opportunity to put their affairs in order.

The “VAT outstanding returns” campaign is aimed at businesses that have ignored reminders to submit one or more pending documents. Some organisations will have received an assessment of VAT for the periods.

Taxpayers have until 28 February to submit their returns and pay outstanding VAT. Those who do not make use of the opportunity “will receive closer attention” from the Revenue.

The department says, “If you have underpaid VAT because your returns are not up to date, you may have to pay a default surcharge, a penalty, or both on top of the VAT you owe. If you submit your return... now, you will get the best terms available.”

Firms can take part by completing and paying outstanding VAT returns immediately, or by telling the taxman that they have stopped trading or have changed their business details.

Help is available from the VAT helpline on 0845 010 9000.
