A client signed his self-assessment tax return for the year ended 5 April 2012, returned it to his agent, and then died before the agent was able to submit the form to HMRC. Can it still be submitted?

I am dealing with a rather sad case. One of my clients was nearing the end of their life and wished to keep their affairs as neat as possible for their executors.

I prepared their personal self-assessment tax return for the year ended 5 April 2012 and sent it to them for approval and signature.

The form was approved and signed but between being posted back to me and my receipt of it the client passed away.

Can readers advise what I should now do? Can I simply submit the return – I intend to do this online – or should I start again prepare a new return for that year and send this to the executor for their signature?

I cannot seem to find a definitive answer to this question and would therefore very much appreciate thoughts on this.
