'Problems with returns are your fault'

I was interested to read the replies to the query The young ones and readers might be interested in my self-employed daughter’s experience.

The current tax return only asks for a tick if the student loan is repaid via employment; there is no box to tick if you are self employed.

So the procedure now seems to be as follows.

  1. You notify that you have a student loan on your tax return as a ‘white space’ disclosure.
  2. HMRC ignore this.
  3. HMRC send you a tax request calculating the self employment tax due but ignoring the student loan.
  4. You pay this tax demand.
  5. Months later HMRC notice you have a student loan and accuse you of not properly putting it on the tax return.
