The SA donate scheme has been underused and, as announced at the 2011 Budget, will be withdrawn from April, meaning self assessment (SA) taxpayers will no longer be able to send a tax refund to a chosen charity straight from their return.
Under the system, introduced in 2005, SA taxpayers can direct HMRC to pay a refund to a charity of their choice and claim gift aid on the donation where appropriate
The option will be removed for forms for tax years 2011/12 onwards and, although it will still appear on forms for earlier years, repayments will be sent to the taxpayer, not to a nominated charity.
