On 13 January 2012, HMRC’s press release reported that David Perrin, deputy managing director at Vantis Tax Ltd, devised and operated a tax avoidance scheme that he sold to wealthy taxpayers in order to exploit the law on giving shares to charity.
He was subsequently convicted of ‘dishonestly submitting, facilitating and inducing others to submit claims for tax relief’.
Given Mr Perrin worked for the Inland Revenue in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I wondered if HMRC’s headline ‘Accountant sang...’ was not a little one-sided.
