Veteran adviser John Whiting OBE has been appointed tax director of the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) on a permanent basis, 14 months after taking on the role in a temporary capacity.
Mr Whiting, who is a former tax partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers and hold the title of tax policy director at the Chartered Institute of Taxation, will oversee the work of the OTS for the remainder of this parliament alongside the Rt Hon Michael Jack, who has been named permanent chairman.
Mr Jack, an ex-MP and one-time businessman, served as financial secretary to the Treasury from 1995 to 1997, when he was responsible for establishing the Tax Law Rewrite initiative to create clearer legislation.
The OTS was launched in July 2010 to provide the government with independent advice on simplifying the UK tax system. It was tasked by the Exchequer this summer to scrutinise pensioner taxation and employee share schemes, after having already submitted reviews of tax reliefs and small business taxation.
Last month, the office set out a number of options in two consultation papers that focused on disincorporation for small companies and a simpler income tax for the smallest firms.
The OTS has arranged three workshops to discuss the its review discussion papers published in July:
- 11 October, Norwich
- 14 October, Exeter
- 20 October, Preston
