A husband takes his wife into business partnership with him part way through his accounting year. Whether a change of accounting date is required in such circumstances is considered below

I have a new client who has been in business for many years.

His accounts are prepared to 31 December each year and I am in the process of preparing the accounts to 31 December 2009. However he has advised me that with effect from 1 July 2009 his wife joined the business as a partner.

Can readers advise me whether I need to prepare accounts to 30 June 2009 for him as the sole trader and then from 1 July 2009 for the partnership or can I simply do the year’s accounts as normal and then apportion the figures?

I have a doubt in my mind about this as supposing the profit level for the first six-month period was at a completely different level to the second?

Perhaps as they are husband and wife this is not so important but suppose they were...
