Awards for external contributions to tax system

HMRC are to recognise individuals from outside the department who have done the most in advancing transparency in the UK tax system.

Prizes will be presented at 11 Downing Street later this month in front of an invited audience. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges consisting of Revenue employees and external tax experts, including Taxation’s editor, Mike Truman.

The awards – to be presented by the Exchequer secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke – are intended to recognise the contribution that the professional and voluntary communities make in helping HMRC run the tax system in a simple and even-handed manner, and to promote examples of excellent working practices between taxman and taxpayers.

 The nomination criteria were:

  • Commitment: has made a significant individual commitment, either over a concerted period of time or in relation to a specific initiative, to drive forward clarity and ease of use of the tax system, above and beyond their professional position.
  • Customer focussed: has brought and championed customer understanding that has enabled processes, legislation or policies to be better designed from the perspective of both the taxpayer and HMRC.
  • Clarity: has identified through commentary and active contribution the need for greater clarity, and worked with HMRC to achieve a positive change and greater ease of use of the tax system.
