'I was told to write to South Wales area, but the website shows Leicester as the appropriate office'

I have just read Which HMRC office? and I have been to a client’s record on the HMRC website as suggested.

This morning I was told to write to South Wales Area for that client but the website shows ‘Leicester 220601’ as the appropriate office.

So on phoning the HMRC contact centre later and asking why there are two relevant offices for the same taxpayer I was told: first some things should go to one office and some to another; but second as HMRC are now virtual it is only really preferable but not essential to send to the correct office.

Surely it would cause us all less confusion if in giving out the location of a taxpayer’s tax office on the web or by telephone HMRC were at least consistent in their response. I...
