A builder moves from London to the Isle of Wight, but is unable to obtain work there and continues to work in the capital

Until 2001 our client a self-employed builder lived in south London and worked on sites in that same area with refurbishment jobs ranging between one and six months.

In 2001 with the intention of retiring in the near future he moved to the Isle of Wight (IoW) but continued to travel to work on sites in London as this was the location of the majority of his contacts.

He did try to get work on the island by quoting for some refurbishment projects but without success. His contacts and the general boom in the property prices during 2001 to 2006 kept him quite busy working in south London.

On Mondays he would travel to London returning to the IoW on the following Friday.

The costs of his travels from the IoW-to-London (ferry costs and vehicle expenses) as well...
