Let’s face it: no one likes paying tax but few of us have much control in the matter as our tax is automatically deducted by our employers through PAYE.

This is an easy and convenient method of tax collection where the Government is effectively using employers as tax collectors and does not have to put in too much effort itself. However it seems that a substantial number of taxpayers manage to get away with not paying their tax.

In 2007/08 HMRC collected some £450 billion in tax and National Insurance from 35 million taxpayers according to a recent report Management of tax debt HC 216...
