As a nation it good to think that we have moved on somewhat since the era of good King Hal.

We no longer cut off people’s heads for treason or burn them at the stake for heresy and torture well best leave it there perhaps.

Back to the point: Henry VIII could pretty much do what he liked and ensured that he could do with the Statute of Proclamations 1539 which effectively allowed him to make up the rules as he went along. Debate was not something that Henry encouraged.
