Following on from an exchange of letters concerning the incorrect issue of penalties for non-submission of P11Ds I sent HMRC a fee bill for my wasted time.
HMRC initially ‘couldn’t trace’ any letter from me. I had anticipated this happening and sent it recorded delivery.
Eventually they did track it down and sent the usual reasons for why they couldn’t pay for my time.
I ended up writing to the central complaints section and received a reply which in summary seems to be saying:
- We won’t deal with post unless you can prove it was received by us.
- We won’t reimburse you for general mistakes that waste your time if we eventually put it right and you have not charged your client. Prompt correction of IT failures is redress enough.
- We won’t reimburse your client even if you do charge...
