The corporate and employment tax implications of a company's fitness plans

I have a client who is sole director of his own flooring company employing about 12 floor layers (physical work) and five office staff (not so physical!).

The director has been on a bit of a fitness campaign in recent months and feels that his staff would also benefit from adopting a healthier lifestyle.

He has asked about the tax treatment of the following initiatives which would be paid for by the company.

  • Free membership at the local gym for all his staff including himself (this will be paid for as a corporate membership).
  • The company will also pay for an annual health screening for any member of staff that wants one. This will take place at the local private hospital — costing £400 per person.
  • A free tracksuit will be provided for each member of staff (with the company logo...
